Welcome To Lowsec

You’ve taken your first step into a larger world

— Sir Alec Guinness

Greetings citizens! This is the lead graphic designer of the TCOIP podcast, Matthew Fierros, here to introducing the low sec chronicles. The first companion blog to the TCOIP podcast. So, let me explain why I’m making this blog. Scenic the podcasts release in August 2019, things have rapidly growing faster than any of us involved could have dreamed. Thank you! However, with that growth Jacob Lopez (creator) has been more than busy; writing, directing, casting, voicing, funding and constantly battling asthma. Thankfully our executive producer Al Shuler has stepped in to help with; writing, casting, voicing and promoting the show. With that said there is still a lot more to do to keep this podcast afloat. So, I decided to help out as well. This blog is meant to give you listeners updates and other behind the scenes news.

Now a little bit about me. I’m currently a collage senior working towards a degree in digital media, with a minor in graphic design. I know that may sound odd or even backwards and it is. It’s a really long and (extremely) aggravating story that would be way too long for an introduction. So, back to the fun stuff. I enjoy drawing, video-games, comics, movies, and tokusatsu. Some of my favorite movies are Star Wars, marvel, Alien, Heavy wights, Godzilla, but my number one is Robocop.

How did I get involved with the podcast? It all started when I began posting my own digital art. During that time, I was asking Lopez for help editing for my designs before I posted. Then when Lopez starting production on TCOIP he asked me to design the logo. Scenic then I have been the one making the logos, factions, and shirt designs. Also, he’s my cousin so that’s how we actually meet, but it’s not nepotism!

My main goal with this blog is to keep the viewers in the loop about the podcast. We are a super independent production. Our crew is only seven people with different work and life schedules from each other. This has and will keep causing issues with production. I want to be able to help give the views something to enjoy during those hiatus.

Semester Wrap Up

So, this has been the most unique semester in my life. Not only because of a global pandemic, but it was also the first time I published a public site. I have taken a web design class before but we never made those sites public.

The project was meant to teach us how to create and maintain a site. While I have some experience in designing a site, I was never continually adding to it. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. If I could improve the design in any way, I would try to make it fit more with the show. Try to give it that retro future almost blade runner look. Another part of this semester long project was to use social media to promote your work on social media.

Using social media to promote my work is new to me. In hindsight I should have done this a lot sooner. It is the best way to show the world, and future employers, what you have to offer. For the longest time I would focus on building one skill at a time. However, now a days you have to be a jack of all trades to get noticed or hired. It’s something that I have to continually work on. This project showed how social media could help get peoples attain.

Look at the data my twitter post about the blog were some of my highest viewed post. Likewise, the data shows that there were spikes in views to the blog days after posting links to twitter. My most active week was February 17th with 18 views that week. My most viewed post was my second post (red-bubble store now open) which currently has 6 view. Its kind of surprising that some of my newer post have significantly less views than my first two posts. Maybe if I were to post more frequently more of my posts will be viewed.

Something New

Greetings citizens! As I alluded to last time, I had an idea for something for this hiatus period. Now I’m proud to announce the pilot episode of my new spin off, Double Shot. I can hear you asking, ‘you mean like a drink? What are you talking about Matt?’ Well that’s what I here to talk about today.

So, a while back I posted a kind of interview with Jakob on this blog. I originally wanted to do a face to face interview, but little did I know that a few days before the interview the world would enter into the COVID war. We decided that if we couldn’t meet in person then we would do it digitally.

However, the first time we tried to record our interview it didn’t work. We tried several times but we would keep getting lag, freezing, and desyncing video. After six tries I decided to send my questions to Jake so he could record his answers. Once he sent them back, I recorded an intro and outro to for the interview. It was ok, but the way it is you lose out on our back-n-forth we had during our recordings. So, when my FDOM class scheduled a interview assignment I knew what I had to do.

This was it; this was my shot at redemption. First thing we did this time was do a practice run to make sure it worked this time. I was going to be able to take this blog in a whole new direction, but the assignment had a 2-5-minute time limit. Talk about a crowbar to the creative knee. With our first ‘interview’ being close to 25-minutes with just Jake, so I had to think of a way to shorten it. I decided to shorten the amount of questions to only two questions. Even doing this and trying to pace our self’s we still ran almost ten minutes long. So, I had to do a bit of editing.

But this proved to me that we just might have something good here. We could easily reach a 20-minute episode if we don’t worry about time and just let things flow. However, this dose leaves me wondering if I should make more episodes. It would be extremely easy for me too make more episodes and get different people from the cast to interview. Right now, I’m thinking of doing a pilot season of five episodes and seeing how that goes. Until then stay safe, wash your hands, and be good people.

Put On Hold

Greeting citizens! So, a lot has been happening over the month hasn’t it. What started out as a wide spread out brake has turned into a global pandemic. With people being told to stay home for the foreseeable future. Honestly it sounds exactly like the beginning of a zombie movie.

Practically everything is being closed to slow the spread of the virus. Including the show. I’m sorry to report that production of the show is currently being postponed. This decision was made to insure the health and well-being of cast, especially Jacob.

In case you haven’t heard it before Jake has really bad asthma. Putting him at super high risk if he were to contract Covid-19, basically he’d die. Meaning he has to social distance in order to protect himself. With the way we currently have things set up that mean we can’t continue recording the podcast.

Our current set up is that the cast will go to Jakob to record their lines for the show. As I previously sated, we can’t do that and risk Jakob’s health. Along with the fact that only two of our cast have their own mics to record from home. This puts us in a bit of a rough spot right now. However, that might not be the case for long.

If more of our cast were able to get mics then we could continue the show. It would take a little longer to do, but it could be done. As of right Jake, Jason (voice of Roster), and Al (co-writer and voice of Freddy) have mics and can record from home. Eric (voice of Veronykis and host of BtS) can record from his phone, who knew iPhone had good mics. Steph (voice of Fire woman and lead musician) and Hanna (voice of Harley) are in talks of getting mics as well. However, we do have people coming in to record voices for the last three episodes of this season.

We’re still working things out. For now, the podcast is on hold, but don’t worry its only temporary. Jake is still writing for season two. I also have an idea of something in the works while we wait. Until then stay safe, wash your hands, and be good people.

Megustalations

Greetings Citizens! I would like to take this time to pay tribute to the Last Podcast Network. Click Here. LPN is the new home site for a large verity of podcasts. Such as; Wizard and The Bruiser (nerd culture), The Story Must Be Told (short fiction anthology), Page 7 (celebrity gossip), Last Podcast on The Left (horror), Abe Lincoln’s Top Hat (politics), and many more. As most of you know ‘The Last Podcast on The Left’ and ‘The Story Must Be Told’ are some of the inspirations for TCOIP.

LPOTL is a horror comedy podcast hosted by Marcus Parks, Ben Kissel, and Henry Zebrowski. Every week the guys explore horrors of the world both real and imaginary. Such horrors as true crimes, serial killers, pheromonal hauntings, conspiracy theories, cults, supernatural creatures, and extraterrestrial incentres. Nothing is too strange for these boys. Each episode gives an in-depth look at cases that will chill your bones and bursting laughing at the same time. This is the perfect show to put on while you’re working, I’m doing it right now.

TSMBT is whole different box of crazy. The show is readings of short stories, but framed as a weekly service of the church of the story. Reid Faylor, Andrew Short, and other gust act as both host and preachers deliver a multitude of stories every Tuesday. However, the really captivating thing about this podcast is the production that goes into the stories. They add a whole slue of sound effects that make you feel like you’re listening to a movie. Jake has said several times that he got the idea to add sound effects and background music to his podcast form this podcast.

If you ever want to find a podcast or just want something new, then check out Last Podcast Network. Chances are you’ll find something for you in their lineup of shows. They got everything from news to help you chat with co-workers to horrors that will keep you up at night. Just let them know that TCOIP sent yea.  As they say on LPOTL hail yourselves, hail Satan, hail Gein, megustalations!

Different Kind of Interview

Greeting citizens! So, this post has been a nightmare to put together. I originally wanted this post to be an exclusive interview with Jacob Lopez. I had planned to conduct this interview at TCOIP HQ (aka Jake’s house). However, that was before the COVID-19 outbreak.

It is imperative that Jake self-quarantines during this crisis! As we have stated before, and I will state in the interview, Jake isn’t healthy enough to fight COVID-19. Simply put he will die. With that said we couldn’t have the sit-down interview I had originally planned. Thankfully we have technology!

Not wanting to waste a good idea we decided to have a video interview. That’s when we ran into our old friend technical difficulties. We couldn’t record during our interview and when we were able to record it would crash our call. Needless to say, it was a very stressful Saturday afternoon. I ended up having to send Jake my questions so he could record his answers. It wasn’t the ideal solution, but you work with what your given.

Now that I had the audio interview ready to go all I need to do was upload it to WordPress. Now to tell you how that went. I found out that I can’t upload audio files to the blog with my free domain. I would need to upgrade to one of the subscription plans. At the time of this post I am a college student and can’t afford to add another monthly payment. I have to eat you know. I may look into it more after school but its just not in the cards right now.

However, I can still embed and link videos with a free domain. I had to send the fully edited interview to Jake so he could upload it to YouTube. Then I can copy the link and put it here for you all to enjoy. So, after all this mess I can now say that the interview finally ready for your viewing pleasure. I’m defiantly going to try to get really interview, but that will have to wait till things cool down. Until then sit back, relax, and enjoy the interview.

In the Works

Greeting citizens! Here with a quick update about the state of the show. I am happy to announce that the rest of season one’s writing is done. Earlier in February episode nine was released. That just leaves four more episodes in season one.

After much planning, creator, Jake Lopez has announced that season one will be 13 episodes. “The rest of season is written and ready to record.” Lopez said. “Season 2 is already being worked on. We have a lot on the way.” (https://www.instagram.com/p/B89kq26HuLz/) Episode ten is currently under construction. There are still more ‘Tapes of the Elders’ currently in production. Not to mention ‘Behind the Sector’ episodes are always popping up when you least expected it. So, don’t worry there won’t be too much of a heist after season one.

However, just because episode 10 is in the works doesn’t mean it will be done soon. A little behind scenes of how this works. First Jake writes the episodes, which he’s been working on for years. If you’ve been listing to BtS you’ll know he’s been working on this story since elementary school. Once the episodes are written we have to get the voices. That’s one our biggest hurtles scheduling.

As I stated in a previous a previous post, we are a super independent production. Meaning that this podcast is our second job. Everyone working on the podcast has their own crazy schedules that we have to work around. The recordings easy, its just getting everyone in one place is the problem. Once we have the voices recorded, we then have to get the music and sound effects in place.

Thankfully we have Stephanie Buchanan working on the music. She’s been working on the music since episode four. With Steph’s help the music aspect of the show is smooth sailing. Now the real challenge are the sound effects for the show. By far this is the most time-consuming part of production. Thankfully now that were around fifteen episodes in, including Tapes of the Elders, we have a catalog of sounds that we can use.

But, don’t worry were making progress! With each episode we learn how to get better and faster. Before you know it I’ll be letting you know that season 2 is around the corner.

Red-bubble Store Now Open

Greetings citizens! I’m existed to announce that we now have a Redbubble store, kind of. That’s right we now have merch available now! Check it out TCOIP STORE with even more coming soon.

We have finally opened our official store front. This is something we have been wanting to do for a while now. After much research, and my own personal experience, we decided to use red bubble as our host. The main reason we choice R.B. is that we have the ability to control the percentage of the sale. Meaning we get to set how much we get back from a sale. For instance, on other sites a customer would spend $20-$25 for a shirt, but the seller would only get $2 from the sale. True story this happened to me for three years. Like I said before here we can set how much we get back from a sale!

The second reason we chose Red bubble is that gives us access to print our designs on tones of products. Such as shirts, jackets, leggings, coasters, clocks, stickers, coasters, and so much more. Honestly its kind of ridicules how many things they’ll print your designs on. It’s like if they toke the merchandising joke from Spaceballs as a legit business model. However, this is where we kind of ran into an issue.

Right now, we have the main logo available for purchase. It is available to be printed on a lot of products, but for some reason when you search us on the site it would only show it available as an art print. Then once you clicked the art print it would show the design available on everything else. After Jake and I messed with it for a while we were able to get it to show as an acrylic block as well. We don’t even know how we did that. So, the logo is available to print on shirts and other products, but is only showing the block now. We’re still looking into this. It doesn’t do this on my personal store. If you can help us fix this issue contact us at tcoipcast@gmail.com. Just put ‘store help’ as the subject.

So, until next time, this is Matt signing out.
